Blackstone Fortress Bases Tutorial

Hi !

I painted Blackstone Fortress Kill Team band recently as a commission and many people liked my bases and were asking me how I did them. As I start my blog, I would like to share with you how I did them as first useful post. I am talking about these bases (photo below). I will post more photos of this squad later on this blog (for now you can see them on my Instagram and Facebook account).

Most of the bases I saw online were more or less the same, I wanted something different, eye catching and quite fast in realization. This squad was a commission but I have my own Blackstone Fortress and currently I am painting them again for myself (that’s why I can make tutorial for you) :) I will make more advanced bases for my explorers and special (for me) characters. The bases in real are turquoise not blue, but the camera is not well catching it :) First I cut with scissors small triangles from plasticard, and then glue them to the bases randomly, this time I even tried some of them vertical. After triangles I put sand on the bases as usual.

1. Plasticard sheet

2. Cutting small triangles from plasticard

3. Gluing plasticard to the bases

4. Gluing sand to the bases

I use black primer from AK, I like its extreme matt and that it is not plugging my airbrush. Then I use pure white from Model Color Vallejo to make a persuading (normal white paint just diluted with water).

5. Priming black (AK black primer)

6. Preshading (Vallejo Model Color White)

7. Airbrushing with Game Color Turquoise 72.024 (diluted with water), leave some black color and don not cover strongly the white preshading.

8. Airbrushing brighter edge with VMC White with a little bit of VGC Turquoise (Ratio 9/10, more or less).

9. Careful airbrushing with VMC White just the tips of the triangles.

10. After airbrushing I painted all sand black (be careful not to touch triangles) and then dry brushed it with Citadel Foundation Adeptus Battlegrey, and added some spots of green pigment from vallejo (hardly visible on photos).

And that’s it :D Hope you liked it, if you have any questions do not hesitate to write to me :) I will be posting miniatures I currently paint on this blog soon :) Happy painting !
